Once Israel was renowned for its bold, daring operations like the one at the Munich Olympics, the raid on Entebbe, and the more recent takedown of a Syrian nuclear reactor. Today – following the Schalit swap for 1,000 terrorists – it is perceived by many as a country that surrenders to terrorist demands.
Is Israel the country it once was? Does an Israel that caved to the demands of terrorists even have the strength to push back against pressure from the Obama administration, much less take down the looming threat of a nuclear Iran?
Yaakov Katz will speak on the recent, world-changing upheavals in the Middle East, particularly how the so-called Arab Spring is quickly becoming an Islamic Winter, with Iran emerging as the big winner. He will discuss how dramatic developments like the Schalit exchange impact Israel, its national security, and its future.
Yaakov Katz is the military correspondent and defense analyst for The Jerusalem Post and the Israel correspondent for Jane’s Defence Weekly, the international military magazine.
His first book, Israel vs. Iran – The Shadow War was published in Israel in March 2011 and was a national bestseller. It will be published in the US by the fall.
Katz led the Post’s coverage of the recent IDF wars and operations including the Second Lebanon War against Hezbollah in 2006 and Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip in 2009.
Originally from Chicago, Katz moved to Israel in 1993 and served in the IDF Armored Corps. He lectures widely in the US and Israel on military affairs, lives in Jerusalem with his wife and three daughters and has a law degree from Bar-Ilan University.
