Human Rights NGOs and the Assault on Israel’s Legitimacy

(NGO – non-governmental organization)

NGO Monitor, a Jerusalem-based research institution, provides information and analysis, promotes accountability, and supports discussion on the reports and activities of political advocacy NGOs claiming to advance human rights and humanitarian agendas in the framework of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

NGO Monitor has revealed, in many cases, the established humanitarian NGOs produce reports and launch campaigns that stand in sharp contradiction to their own noble mission statements claiming to uphold universal human rights values. Selective morality, as evidenced in the obscuring or simply the removal of context alongside highly misleading reporting, often through incomplete images, have made widespread gross distortions of the humanitarian dimension of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Gerald Steinberg is president of NGO Monitor and professor of Political Science at Bar Ilan University. A renowned scholar and public speaker on Middle East issues, Steinberg’s op-eds have been published in the Wall St. Journal (Europe), Financial Times, Ha’aretz, International Herald Tribune, Jerusalem Post, and other publications. He has appeared as a commentator on CNN, BBC, CBC, and NPR, and has addressed the Israeli Knesset and European Parliament. He is the co-editor of the recently-published The Goldstone Report “Reconsidered”: A Critical Analysis, a comprehensive assessment of the UN report on the 2009 Gaza war.
