Letter to Red Cross

We, as children of Holocaust survivors, are obligated to take a proactive role in these difficult times. We must not forget that the world failed to cry out while Hitler perpetrated his evil acts.  We will not let this happen again.  As the first action of this new group for children of survivors of the Holocaust in the greater Los Angeles area, we ask you to act immediately on the issue of the kidnapped Israeli soldiers:  Gilad Shalit, Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser.  The International Committee of the Red Cross must be pressured to fulfill its own mandate and compel the captors to allow the Red Cross access to the soldiers and to allow them contact with their families...as they have done for other prisoners of war in other conflicts.

The thought of these Jewish soldiers in the hands of these terrorists is beyond comprehension.  The horrifying anxiety their loved ones must be living with is unimaginable as was the horror forced on our family members in Hitler's camps.

Please add your name to the following letter and forward it to the Red Cross by email or fax.  You can also call any of the phone numbers with your message.  We must let them hear our voices as they have not been heard before.  Let the world know that we will not stand by silently -- again.

July 21, 2006

Jakob Kellenberger, President

International Committee of the Red Cross
19 avenue de la Paix
CH 1202, Geneva, Switzerland

Dear Mr. Jakob Kellenberger and Committee members:

OPEN LETTER TO RED CROSS REGARDING KIDNAPPED ISRAELI SOLDIERS

Gilad Shalit, 19

Eldad Regev, 26

Ehud Goldwasser, 31

IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit and reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were kidnapped from within the State of Israel, a sovereign nation, in an unprovoked attack by Hezbollah and Hamas and are being held hostage. We demand that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) immediately exert the same effort on behalf of the Israeli Jewish soldiers being held by Hezbollah and Hamas that you have done on behalf of other prisoners of war in other conflicts.

According to the ICRC website, “…The ICRC has been able to persuade the warring parties in conflicts around the world to treat detainees in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, which have been adopted by virtually every country in the world…  And this same principle underlies the ICRC's action in visiting Taliban and al-Qaida members held by US or Afghan forces - no more, no less.”

Hezbollah and Hamas are extremist Islamic groups identified by the international free world as terrorist organizations committed to the destruction of the State of Israel and are legitimized by the fact that:

  1. Hamas was elected as the government of the Palestinian people of the West Bank and Gaza; and,

  2. Hezbollah is represented in the present Lebanese parliament and cabinet.

Therefore, Hezbollah and Hamas are required to adhere to international law.

Under these circumstances, we appeal to the ICRC that they demand and be granted immediate access to the Israeli soldiers to verify that they are alive and in good condition and be allowed to contact their families in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, Common Article 3.

Respectfully,

Doris Wise Montrose,

Acting President
